THE ARCHIVE OF BANDHEJ

THE FABRIC
Every Marazim garment begins with hand-selected fabric — pure Gaji silk — sourced from weavers who have worked with these textiles for generations. Nothing synthetic. Nothing rushed.
THE TYING
Our karigars tie each knot individually by hand — pinching precise points of fabric and wrapping them tightly with thread to resist the dye. One dupatta requires 25000-30,000 individual ties. This stage alone takes up to three weeks.
THE DYEING
The tied fabric is submerged in natural or high-quality reactive dyes — colours chosen for their depth, permanence, and cultural resonance.
THE RELEASE
After dyeing, every knot is cut or unwrapped by hand — revealing the resist-dyed pattern beneath. This is the moment of transformation: where tied cloth becomes bandhej.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bandhej (also called bandhani) is an ancient Indian resist-dyeing technique originating in Gujarat and Rajasthan. Individual points of fabric are tied tightly with thread before dyeing — the tied areas resist the colour, creating a pattern of dots and circles when the ties are released. It is one of India's oldest textile traditions. Approximately 4000 years old.
